Birding Fall 1999 (August-November)Lapland Longspurs (MH, SS) , a Mc Cown's Longspur (MH), and Chestnut-collared Longspurs (MH, SS) were observed on various dates during the latter third of October and early November on publicly off-limits areas of Edward's AFB and China Lake NWS. The listing here is not intended to frustrate, but rather to inform you to be on the lookout for longspurs in publicly accessible areas of the region. We, Nov 3 - An immature Eurasian Wigeon and a male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at Galileo Hill. MH. We, Nov 3 - A male Vermilion Flycatcher and a Swamp Sparrow at California City. MH. We, Nov 3 - Two Surf Scoters at China Lake NWS (in a publicly inaccessible area). SS. We, Nov 3 - Four Mountain Bluebirds along Kelso Valley Road just under five miles south of Hwy. 178 in Weldon. BB. Su, Oct 31 - An imm. Northern Goshawk at Galileo Hill. KaG. Su, Oct 31 - A juv. Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and a Swamp Sparrow at California City. MH. Sa &/or Su, Oct 30 & 31 - A very late Willow Flycatcher (TW) along with an adult male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (MH) and Winter Wren (KaG) at Galileo Hill. Sa, Oct 23 - Red-eyed Vireo at Galileo Hill. MH. Sa, Oct 23 - Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (adult male) with a hybrid at Galileo Hill. MH. Sa, Oct 23 - Summer Tanager and White-throated Sparrow still present at Galileo Hill. MH. Fr, Oct 22 - Yellow-shafted Flicker, juv. Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and Clay-colored Sparrow continuing at California City. MH. Tu, Oct 5- Ovenbird and Black-and-white Warbler still at California City. MH, GR. Su, Oct 3 - Gray Catbird, Lucy's Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, and Swamp Sparrow at Galileo Hill. MH. Su, Oct 3- Ovenbird and Black-and-white Warbler at California City. MH. Tu, Sep 21 - Bay-breasted Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, and Ovenbird at Galileo Hill. MH. Tu, Sep 21 - American Redstart (adult male) still at Galileo Hill. MH. Su, Sep 19 - Lawrence's Goldfinch. Three individuals flying and calling over the South Fork Kern River dry bed just of the Kern River Preserve Nature Trail. This is only the second sighting since late July (The other of a single individual was on Sep 11.). This species was present in the high hundreds to low thousands in May and the first half of June. Seventy-eight were recorded on a major census on July 10. By the end of July there were none. Su, Sep 19 - Yellow-rumped (Audubon's) Warbler. First of winter. Vulture Count Site. BB. One individual, first of fall migrant. Vulture Count Site. MuH. We, Sep 15 - Lucy's Warbler and adult male American Redstart still present at Galileo Hill. MH. We, Sep 15 - Vermilion Flycatcher at California City. MH. Tu, Sep 14 - White-crowned Sparrow. Two individuals, first of winter. Cane Brake. DLa. Tu, Sep 14 - Chestnut-sided Warbler. California City. DE. Tu, Sep 14 - Turkey Vulture. 705 individuals (Highest one-day count through Sep 19.). Vulture Count Site. BB. Mo, Sep 13 - Willow Flycatcher. The last report of this summer's territorial individuals. EC. Mo, Sep 13 - Osprey. Four individuals of this species were recorded migrating south over the Vulture Count Site. CO. Su, Sep 12 - Philadelphia Vireo, Virginia's Warbler, Lucy's Warbler, female Blackburnian Warbler, adult male American Redstart, a dull Painted Bunting, and a Bobolink. Galileo Hill. DT, JW. Su, Sep 12 - American Goldfinch. The first individual of this species since last spring was observed/heard on the Kern River Preserve with a large flock of Lesser Goldfinches. BB. Sa, Sep 11 - Virginia's Warbler, Lucy's Warbler, female Blackburnian Warbler, female American Redstart, and a dull Painted Bunting. Galileo Hill. MH. Sa, Sep 11 - Lawrence's Goldfinch. The first individual of this species to be seen since late July was at Kern River Preserve Headquarters. BB. Mo, Sep 6 - Swainson's Hawk. Three light phase individuals of this species were observed migrating south over the Kern Valley Vulture Count Site (On a hillslope on the south side of Kelso Valley Road just before the Kelso Creek bed crossing), five miles south of the Kern River Preserve/Hwy. 178. Also observed migrating was an Osprey. BB, CO. Su, Sep 5 - Northern Goshawk. An adult of this species was observed migrating south at the Kern Valley Vulture Count Site. Also observed migrating south were two Osprey and and a Swainson's Hawk. TG, CO. Sa, Sep 4 - Peregrine Falcon. An immature individual of this species was observed migrating south at the Kern Valley Vulture Count Site. Also observed migrating south was an Osprey. TG. Fr, Sep 3 & Sa, Sep 4 - Willow Flycatcher, "Western" Flycatcher, Marsh Wren, Swainson's Thrush, Orange-crowned Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Lucy's Warbler (3 & 4 Sep), Yellow Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler (4 Sep), American Redstart (4 Sep), Wilson's Warbler, Western Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeak, Lazuli Bunting, Indigo Bunting (3 & 4 Sep), Green-tailed Towhee, Chipping Sparrow, Brewer's Sparrow, Black-throated Sparrow, Sage Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, and Orchard Oriole (4 Sep).
