Nestled within the protective reaches of the Sequoia National Forest, Valley Wild offers many fantastic opportunities for recreation. Here are just a few. Kern River Preserve - located on Hwy. 178 just east of Sierra Way along the South Fork of the Kern River. This 2789-acre preserve offers refuge for hundreds of species of animals and plants. Open daily from dawn to dusk, the Kern River Preserve is home to nature festivals and tours. Kernville - A quaint town along the North Fork of the Kern River Kern Valley Museum - This museum offers more historical information than many in large cities. A must see when in Kernville. Kern River Valley Fish Hatchery - A natural history museum, tours, and an aquarium are just a few of the interesting things about the hatchery. Nature Alley - This website offers an abundance of natural history information for all of Kern County. Onyx - Home to the oldest store in Kern County. Kelso Valley - An interesting blend of Mojave and Great Basin Desert flora offer area visitors one of the unique vistas within the area. Squirrel Valley - A great place to find Western Gray Squirrels and fall roosting Turkey Vultures. Lower Kern - below Isabella dam. trails, nature observation, photography, rafting, birding, and fishing are just some of the things to do on both the upper and lower Kern. Upper Kern - above Kernville on the north fork along Sierra Way. Chimney Peak Back Country Byway - a road off of Hwy 178 leading to Kennedy Meadows. The road bisects several wilderness areas. Kennedy Meadows - A Great Basin Desert scrub meadow that was created by the flow of the South Fork Kern. Year-round water flow. Sequoia National Forest - the following are just a few of the forests many amenities. South Fork Wildlife Area - The furthest west riparian forest on the South Fork Kern. Home to many riparian obligate species, completely flooded during high water storage years on Isabella Reservoir. Owned and managed by Sequoia National Forest. Sierran Forest - A general description of the conifer forest ecoregion surrounding the Kern River Valley. Isabella Reservoir - An artificial reservoir built from 1948-1953 to contain flood waters for San Joaquin Valley agricultural interests. An economic boon to the current residents of the Kern River Valley. Reservoir level varies between 75,000 and 570,000 acre-feet depending on annual rainfall. Giant Sequoia National Monument - Newly created national monument that preserves in perpetuity the southernmost Giant Sequoia groves. Greenhorn Mountains - the northern boundary of the Kern Valley, northern portions contain the Giant Sequoia NM and southern portions are part of the Sequoia National Forest. Piute Mountains - the southern boundary of the Kern Valley, home to two botanical areas (Piute Cypress BA and Inspiration Point BA) and Bright Star Wilderness. Scodie Mountains - the southeastern boundary of the Kern Valley encompasses most of the Kiavah Wilderness Kern Plateau - the northeastern boundary of the Kern Valley, three wilderness areas are found on the northern and eastern boundaries of the plateau (Domelands, South Sierra, and Golden Trout).
