Th, May 31 - An Ovenbird, two American Redstarts, and a Swainson's Hawk this morning at Galileo Hill Park/Silver Saddle Resort were reported. KG.

Th, May 31 - A singing Red-eyed Vireo was reported from Migrant Corner, Kern River Preserve this morning. SSc.

Th, May 31 - A Brown-crested Flycatcher was reported from along the Migrant Corner Trail (SSc) and at least one other was reported from near the parking lot for the north side of the South Fork Wildlife Area off Sierra Way, both this morning (JS, MW). Several Chipping Sparrows were reported in this unique Fremont cottonwood/willow nesting area for this species (TB, JS, MW, et. al.).  TB, SSc, JS, MW.

We, May 30th & Th, May 31st- Species recorded in the Sequoia National Forest, Wednesday, May 30 and Thursday, May 31 at Holey Meadow, Redwood Meadow, & the Trail of 100 Giants (thiry miles north of Kernville) for he upcoming Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology Macauley Library of Natural Sounds disc set "Bird Songs of Central and Southern California" by Geoffrey A. Keller included: Red-breasted Sapsucker, Hammond's Flycatcher, Dusky Flycatcher, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Nashville Warbler, MacGillivray's Warbler, Fox Sparrow, Lincoln's Sparrow. We, May 30th - A singing male Hooded Warbler was reported from Butterbredt Spring. JH.

We, May 30th - A Black-and-white Warbler, Hooded Warbler, and a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak were reported this morning and a Summer Tanager in the late afternoon from Galileo Hill Park/Silver Saddle Resort. KG.

We, May 30th - Band-tailed Pigeon, Clark's Nutcrackers, and Red-breasted Nuthatches were report from Galileo Hill Park/Silver Saddle Resort this afternoon. TB, JS, et. al.

We, May 30th - A drumming and calling Pileated Woodpecker was reported from Sequoia National Forest's Holey Meadow Campground off the Western Divide Highway, thirty-one miles north of Kernville. TG, GK.

We, May 30th - An adult male Indigo Bunting and an adult male Lazuli Bunting were reported to be involved in counter-singing the same "short" song (not as long as a "classic" Lazuli Bunting song) at the east end of the Kern River Preserve east off of Fay Ranch Road. The Indigo Bunting appeared to be the aggressor. Other species reported from the same area on a 8:45am-9:30am visit included: Turkey Vulture, Red-tailed Hawk, Mourning Dove, Hairy Woodpecker, Western Wood-Pewee, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Western Kingbird, Tree Swallow, Common Raven, Oak Titmouse, Bewick's Wren, House Wren, European Starling, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Summer Tanager, Blue Grosbeak, Spotted Towhee, Lark Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow (nevadensis), Song Sparrow, Red-winged Blackbird (Kern), Western Meadowlark, Bullock's Oriole, House Finch, and Lawrence's Goldfinch. Tu, May 29th - A Red-eyed Vireo and a Prothonotary Warbler were reported this morning to be at Galileo Hill Park/Silver Saddle Resort. Many observers. 

Tu, May 29th - A singing male Baltimore Oriole was reported this afternoon to be at Galileo Hill Park/Silver Saddle Resort. KN (verified by AH).

Tu, May 29th - A silent male Hooded Warbler and a singing male Indigo Bunting were reported from Butterbredt Spring. BB (verified by JH).

Tu, May 29th - A singing male Northern Parula was reported from the east end of the Kern River Preserve off of Fay Ranch Road. JL.

Tu, May 29th - A Kentucky Warbler was reported from a birder's private residence in Inyokern. TM (verified by SS).

Tu, May 29th - Species recorded Monday, May 28 and Tuesday, May 29 in the Landers Meadow/Landers Camp area of the Piute Mountains for he upcoming Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology Macauley Library of Natural Sounds disc set "Bird Songs of Central and Southern California" by Geoffrey A. Keller included: Dusky Flycatcher, Pinyon Jay, Mountain Chickadee, Pygmy Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Yellow-rumped "Audubon's" Warbler, Green-tailed Towhee, Purple Finch. GK, TG.

Mo, May 28th - An Eye-browed Thrush, Blue-winged Warbler, American Redstart, Northern Waterthrush, and Ovenbird were all reported from the archery range at Galileo Hill Park/Silver Saddle Resort during a three hour Eye-browed Thrush observation period..."The Patagonia Roadside Rest effect." Mo, May 28th - A Magnolia Warbler was reported from near Cantil. ST, et. al.

Mo, May 28th - A Tennessee Warbler (ST) and a female Hooded Warbler (JS) were reported from Butterbredt Spring. ST, JS, et. al.

Su, May 27 - A male American Redstart was reported near the archery range at Galileo Hill. TE.

Su, May 27 - A "dawn song" of Brown-crested Flycatcher was recorded at the Kern River Preserve for the upcoming Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology Macauley Library of Natural Sounds disc set "Bird Songs of Central and Southern California" by Geoffrey A. Keller. Other bird species recorded for the Cornell production using the Kern River Valley as the base for operations include: Southwestern Willow Flycatcher (extimus), Cassin's Kingbird, Plumbeous Vireo, House Wren, Yellow Warbler, Summer Tanager, Blue Grosbeak, Chipping Sparrow, Brewer's Sparrow, Black-throated Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow (nevadensis), Kern Red-winged Blackbird, Brewer's Blackbird, Brown-headed Cowbird, Bullock's Oriole, and Scott's Oriole. Su, May 27 - 258 Lawrence's Goldfinches (in several flocks of up to 30 individuals) were reported from a census taken along the 0.7 mile length of the dirt ranch road leading west from Kern River Preserve Headquarters. BB.

Sa, May 26 - Numbers of Lawrence's Goldfinches are building along the dirt ranch road leading west for 0.7 mile from Kern River Preserve Headquarters. Several flocks of a dozen or more were encountered in the first 0.3 mile. The peak of numbers is usually  reached between now and mid-June when several hundred may be present. Numbers rapidly diminish throughout the rest of June and July. Zero were present anywhere in the Kern Valley in August 1999 & August 2000. GF.

Sa, May 26 - Nesting Red Crossbills were reported from the  Ridgecrest Cemetery off County Line Road at the San Bernardino County line south off Hwy. 178. SS. 

Sa, May 26 - A male Indigo Bunting was reported from the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve in the same area as during the 2000 nesting season. There is large snag alongside the forest side of the Public Access Trail which is readily visible up ahead after reaching the far side of the foot bridge over Cane Brake Creek. Look for the Indigo Bunting in and around the snag. AS.

Sa, May 26 - Virginia Rail, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Anna's Hummingbird, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Brown-crested Flycatcher, Violet-green Swallow,  Canyon Wren, Western Bluebird, Cedar Waxwing (30 individuals), Summer Tanager, Lazuli  Bunting, Blue Grosbeak, California Towhee, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Kern Red-winged Blackbird, Tricolored Blackbird, Red Crossbill, and Lawrence's Goldfinch were among those species present along the Public Access Trail at the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve.  BB, GK, AS, et. al..

Sa, May 26 -  Willow Flycatcher, Summer Tanager, Lazuli  Bunting, Blue Grosbeak, Kern Red-winged Blackbird, Tricolored Blackbird, Bullock's Oriole, Lesser Goldfinch, and Lawrence's Goldfinch were reported from Kern River Preserve Headquarters and Nature Trail.

Fr,  May 25 - A male Rose-breasted Grosbeak was reported  from Galileo Hill; first in a Eucalyptus in the pitch & putt golf course area, then in the fruiting mulberries by the hotel. SS.

Fr., May 25 - Brown-crested Flycatcher was recorded (and observed) from the Public Access Trail foot bridge at the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve for an upcoming Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology Macauley Library of Natural Sounds disc set "Bird Songs of Central and Southern California" by Geoffrey A. Keller. GK, TG.

Fr., May 25 - Plumbeous Vireos were observed and recorded at three locations at Chimney Creek Campground: from the Chimney Peak Road a few hundred yards below the campground entrance (nest found by TG and recordings made by GK), between the campground entrance and the campground host's trailer, and near the end of the campground road. GK, TG.

Fr, May 25 - Kern River Preserve Headquarters & Nature Trail, 7:15am-8:45am: Great Blue Heron, Mallard, Turkey Vulture, Red-shouldered Hawk, California Quail, Mourning Dove, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Anna's Hummingbird, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Western Wood-Pewee, Willow Flycatcher, Black Phoebe, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Tree Swallow, Common Raven, Oak Titmouse, Bushtit, Bewick's Wren, House Wren, Western Bluebird, American Robin, Cedar Waxwing, European Starling, Yellow Warbler (27 individuals observed!), Common Yellowthroat, Wilson's Warbler (1), Yellow-breasted Chat, Summer Tanager, Blue Grosbeak, Lazuli Bunting, Spotted Towhee, Lark Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Red-winged Blackbird, Tricolored Blackbird, Western Meadowlark, Brewer's Blackbird, Brown-headed Cowbird, Bullock's Oriole, House Finch, Lesser Goldfinch, and Lawrence's Goldfinch. BB.

Th, May 24- A Northern Parula was reported from Butterbredt Spring. AE.

We, May 23 - A male Hooded Warbler was reported from Galileo Hill Park/Silver Saddle Resort. KG.

We, May 23 - 2-4 Black Swifts were observed at one time aerial foraging 7am-8am in their traditional area (see John Kemper's "Birding Northern California," Falcon Press) over South Creek canyon between Mileposts 3.00 and 2.00 (found between the Johnsondale Bridge over the North Fork Kern River and R-Ranch north of Kernville). Also present at this traditional location were  singing and well-observed Black-chinned Sparrows. Other species found at this location included: California Quail, Mountain Quail, Mourning Dove, Acorn Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Western Wood-Pewee, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Cliff Swallow, Cassin's Vireo, Steller's Jay, Western Scrub-Jay, Oak Titmouse, Bewick's Wren, Wrentit, Orange-crowned Warbler, Western Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeak, Lazuli Bunting, Spotted Towhee, California Towhee, Purple Finch, Pine Siskin, Lesser Goldfinch, and Lawrence's Goldfinch. BB, CW, KW.

We, May 23 - A Northern Pygmy Owl and at least five Hermit Warblers and two MacGillivray's Warblers were found along the Tail of 100 Giants, Giant Sequoia National Monument (Sequoia National Forest). The Trail of 100 Giants is off the Western Divide Highway across from Redwood Meadow Campground. This location is thirty-three miles north of Kernville. A wide complement of additional nesting species found in Giant Sequoia montane habitat were present including: Mountain Quail, Hairy Woodpecker, White-headed Woodpecker, Western Wood-Pewee, Hammond's Flycatcher, Steller's Jay, Mountain Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper (5+), Golden-crowned Kinglet, American Robin, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Western Tanager, Fox Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Purple Finch, and Pine Siskin. BB, CW, KW.

We, May 23 - Additional species found at short stops between the Black Swift location cited above and the Trail of 100 Giants included: Common Raven, Warbling Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Nashville Warbler, Chipping Sparrow, Brown-headed Cowbird, and Bullock's Oriole. BB, CW, KW.

Tu, May 22 - About 15 Pinyon Jays, a dozen Clark's Nutcrackers, and three Green-tailed Towhees were observed at Landers Meadow  in the Piute Mountains. A female Ladder-backed Woodpecker and Green-tailed Towhee were at Butterbredt Spring. CW, KW.

Tu, May 22 - A Say's Phoebe and 50-100 Tricolored Blackbirds were within viewing distance of Hwy. 178 between KRP Headquarters and Sierra Way. BB, CW, KW.

Tu, May 22 - Burrowing Owls are being observed regularly, including this morning, at a nesting location 2 miles south on Kelso Valley Road (south from Hwy. 178 and opposite the entrance to the Kern River Preserve). The owls are being seen in a dry pasture on the west side of the road across from an irrigated agriculture area. This is just beyond a long row of trees paralleling the road on the left and a school with a large gymnasium building on the right. BB, CW, KW.

Tu, May 22 - A Greater Roadrunner, several Cactus Wrens, and several Black-throated Sparrows were present this morning along Kelso Valley Road in the Joshua tree and desert shrub woodland in Kelso Creek wash which is crossed just before the junction with Kelso Creek Road. This is about 5 miles south of Hwy. 178 and the Kern River Preserve. BB, CW, KW.

Mo, May 21 - An American Redstart was found at Galileo Hill. RS, JF, et. al.

Su, May 20 - A Least Flycatcher was reported to be in the trees behind Kern River Preserve Headquarters. KN,BW.

Su, May 20 - Two Bell's Vireos were heard and seen well below the main spring at Butterbredt Spring along with several Mountain Quail with young. MF, et. al.

Su, May 20 - A Yellow-throated Vireo (JW, et. al.) and a Black-and white Warbler (BK, PS, et. al) were observed near Cantil.

Su, May 20 - A Magnolia Warbler was reported from the edge of the Tierra del Sol Golf Course in California City (JW, et. al.), Red Crossbills were found on the "Piney Knoll" in Central Park near the golf course club house (BK, et. al.), and the male Vermilion Flycatcher was in the picnic area of Central Park (BB, et. al.).

Su, May 20 - A Red-eyed Vireo was observed at Galileo Hill (JSe) along with Red Crossbills.

Su, May 20 - A calling Inca Dove was observed in Ridgecrest in the vicinity of 542 S. Sanders. BB, et. al.

Sa, May 19 - At least three Hooded Warblers (two females and a singing male) were at the main spring at Butterbredt Spring.A Yellow-throated Vireo was found near Cantil (JW, et. al.). A Red-eyed Vireo (JF, et. al.) was along the creek at Galileo Hill and a Northern Waterthrush was found in the vicinity of the archery range and the large lake. JW, TW, et. al..

Sa, May 19 - At least thirty Pinyon Jays were observed on both sides of the Kennedy Meadows Road, extreme southeast Tulare County, this afternoon. They were in the area between Milepost 13 and Milepost 16. Live trees were on the north side of the road. Burned trees from the Manter fire were on the south side of the road. BB, et. al.

Sa, May 19...Black-throated Sparrows and Scott's Orioles along the lower three miles of Chimney Peak Road (Kern County); Plumbeous Vireos at Chimney Creek Campground (Tulare County); Cinnamon Teal, Calliope Hummingbird, Clark's Nutcracker, and Mountain Bluebirds at Troy Meadows (Tulare County); Green-tailed Towhee at Black Rock Ranger Station (Tulare County)...BB, BK, MMi, et. al.

Sa, May 19 - Willow Flycatchers, abundant Yellow Warblers, Yellow-breasted Chats, and Summer Tanagers were observed at the Kern River Preserve. Summer Tanager, Blue Grosbeaks, Lazuli Buntings, Kern Red-winged Blackbirds, and Tricolored Blackbirds were observed at the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve. BB, MF, MMi, et. al.

Fr, May 18 - A Winter Wren and several Hermit Warblers were observed along the Trail of 100 Giants, Western Divide Highway, Tulare County, located 32 road miles north of Kernville. BB, et. al.

Fr, May 18 - A female and a singing male Hooded Warbler were still present at Butterbredt Spring this morning. JH, MMi.

Th, May 17 - Two Northern Parulas, one Northern Waterthrush, and four Hooded Warblers were reported at Butterbredt Spring this morning. RW, RR, JH.

Mo, May 14 - A Pileated Woodpecker was observed at 9am this morning above camp site #9 at Holey Meadow Campground off the Western Divide Highway. JR.

Su, May 13 - Brown-crested Flycatchers have returned to the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve. DC.

Sa, May 12 - Plumbeous Vireos were on nesting territory at Chimney Creek Campground (see Sun, May 6 below). BB.

Sa, May 12 - Eleven Clark's Nutcrackers flying over the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve were away from their expected montane habitat. BB.

Sa, May 12 - The Cane Brake Ecological Reserve hosted numerous Virginia Rails, Nuttall's Woodpeckers, Oak Titmice, Yellow Warblers, Summer Tanagers, Blue Grosbeaks, Lazuli Buntings, Kern Red-winged Blackbirds, Bullock's Orioles, and Lesser Goldfinches along with a colony of several hundred pairs of Tricolored Blackbirds. BB.

Fr, May 11 - A Scarlet Tanager was found in California City and last seen heading towards Central Park. JW.

Fr, May 11 - A White-winged Dove, a Black-and-white Warbler, and an Ovenbird were all found at Butterbredt Spring. Many observers.

Fr, May 11 - A Pileated Woodpecker was observed at the junction of the Western Divide Highway and the entrance to Holey Meadow Campground. DC.

Fr, May 11 - Several White-headed Woodpeckers were observed along the Trail of 100 Giants across from Redwood Meadow Campground off the Western Divide Highway. Also present were several Hermit Warblers on territory. BB.

Fr, May 11 - A Brown-crested Flycatcher was observed from the ranch road leading west from Kern River Preserver Headquarters. BB.

Fr, May 11 - Summer Tanagers were heard and seen at Kern River Preserve Headquarters and at various places along the Nature Trail. Also present were several Willow Flycatchers, Yellow Warblers, Yellow-breasted Chats, Lazuli Buntings, Blue Grosbeaks, and Lawrence's Goldfinches.. BB.

We, May 9 - FIRST OF SPRING KERN VALLEY Nesting  Species: A Willow Flycatcher was seen and heard from the entrance driveway to Kern River Preserve Headquarters. JL.

Su, May 6 - Plumbeous Vireos have returned to nest at Chimney Creek Campground in extreme southeastern Tulare County about 11 miles north of Hwy. 178. A singing individual was heard at the entrance to the campground and a pair were heard and seen in the camp sites found after crossing Chimney Creek. BB.

Su, May 6 - Several Black-chinned Sparrows and a Scott's Oriole were at Milepost 74 on Hwy. 178 west of Walker Pass. BB.

Sa, May 5- A female Virginia's Warbler was observed in the shrubs by the fence above Butterbredt Spring proper. TW.

We, May 2 - A Black-and-white Warbler was observed in a pine tree from the Top of the Park in California City's Central Park. BB. The adult male Vermilion Flycatcher was present at the picnic area. BB.

We, May 2 - Brown-crested Flycatchers were detected in the South Fork Wildlife Area.

Tu, May 1 - FIRST OF SPRING KERN VALLEY Nesting  Species: Brown-crested Flycatchers were detected in the main forest west of Headquarters. MW.

Fr-Su, Apr 27-29 - 220 species of birds were recorded for the primary three day run of the Kern Valley Bioregions Festival. BB.

Fr, Apr 13 - FIRST OF SPRING Migrant Species: A Western Tanager was reported from a private residence on Kelso Valley Road ten-eleven miles south of the Kern River Preserve. DL.

Fr, Apr 13 - Migrating Yellow-rumped Warblers were observed along the trail to Migrant Corner, Kern River Preserve, at the very low rate of 10 individuals per hour this morning (6:20am-7:40am). If there was a migration taking place in numbers, it is speculated that it was at high elevation in the clear, windless sky; well above what could be observed from ground level with binoculars. The only other migrants detected at Migrant Corner this morning were three "Solitary" Vireos, 15-20 foraging Ruby-crowned Kinglets, a Nashville Warbler, and a single Black-headed Grosbeak. Depending upon weather conditions, the number of birds observed may vary dramatically from day to day. BB.

Fr, Apr 13 - A striking, adult male Rufous Hummingbird came to a window mount feeder at Kern River Preserve Headquarters. Individuals of this species should be looked for into early May in the Kern River Valley during their northbound spring migration. BB.

Th, Apr 12 - FIRST OF SPRING KERN VALLEY Nesting Species: A singing male Black-headed Grosbeak was observed at Migrant Corner, Kern River Preserve. BB.

Th, Apr 12 - Ruby-crowned Kinglets were prevalent feeding in willows along the trail to migrant corner this morning. Estimating numbers proved difficult as they were not migrating. But, several dozen were estimated. BB.

Th, Apr 12 - A wave of Black-chinned Hummingbirds apparently arrived at Kern River Preserve Headquarters as there was a very noticeable increase in frequency of sightings at the four hummingbird feeders. BB.

Fr, Apr 6 - A weather front moving in from the northwest may have contributed to a significant tree-top and near ground level northbound migration of 100s of Yellow-rumped Warblers over Migrant Corner, Kern River Preserve, this morning. Also observed were 100s of swallows and a lesser number of Ruby-crowned Kinglets. BB.

Th, Apr 5 - An American Crow, possibly the same individual confirmed present Feb 17-26;March 20, 21, & 30; and April 1,  was  observed again at Kern River Preserve Headquarters. This species is very rare, and rarely reported, in the Kern River Valley. The handful of prior records have each been for one day only. BB.

Tu, Mar 20 - FIRST OF SPRING KERN VALLEY Migrant Species: An adult male Rufous Hummingbird was observed coming to a feeder at Kern River Preserve Headquarters (MW, MT), another adult male was reported from a feeder in Squirrel Valley (EC), and another was reported from a residence in the community of Bodfish (CC, MC). A few individuals of this species, almost always adult males, migrate northward through the Kern River Valley in spring from as early as early February through mid-May. This is in contrast to the thousands that come through each day from mid-July through early September during southbound fall migration. EC, CC, MC, MW, MT.

Sa, Mar 10 - FIRST OF SPRING KERN VALLEY Nesting Species: An adult male Costa's Hummingbird was observed at a feeder in Squirrel Valley. EC.

Fr, Mar 9 - A Harris's Hawk was observed perched, then flying, at the edge of Wofford Heights Park. This individual showed characteristics of a wild bird...perfect feathering and obvious skittishness and quick to fly when approached. JS.

Th, Mar 8 - A Harris's Hawk was observed flying over Wofford Heights. First record for the Kern River Valley But, the origin is undetermined. JS.

Th, Mar 8 - Tricolored Blackbirds have been observed in the yard of Kern River Preserve Headquarters the last several mornings in a mixed flock of Red-winged Blackbirds and Brewer's Blackbirds. Tricolored Blackbirds are being regularly seen lining the edge of the roof of both Rite-Aid and Burger King and in the parking lot in the Kern Valley Plaza shopping center in Lake Isabella. They are also being seen in flocks in the hundreds in the open fields along Hwy. 178 in the three mile stretch east of Sierra Way, Weldon. BB.

Su, Mar 4 - A mixed flock of 40-50 swallows...mostly Tree Swallows and Violet-green Swallows (FIRST OF SPRING KERN VALLEY Migrant Species) with one Bank Swallow (FIRST OF SPRING KERN VALLEY Migrant Species), one Cliff Swallow (FIRST OF SPRING KERN VALLEY Nesting Species), and one Barn Swallow (FIRST OF SPRING KERN VALLEY Nesting Species) were observed over Wofford Heights.
