Bob Barnes & Associates presents: Valley Wild in the beautiful Kern River Valley Kern County, California 2007 NatureFest Schedule at a Glance BIRD SIGHTINGS |
Birding Winter 98/99 (December-February) Goal: To provide a motivating mix of bird species observations with reports of interest to all birders: beginning to expert, Kern County &/or Tulare County specialists, northern California & southern California, out-of-California (U.S. & International), listers and non-listers,... Major Tip: Birding early (starting at dawn) and carefully (spending time) = birds seen... Note: For other winter season bird sightings go to the "CBC's" (Christmas Bird Counts) web page. Clark's & Western Grebe, 18 Dec, estimated six thousand individuals, Isabella Reservoir (MH); Barrow's Goldeneye, 23 Feb, female and second year male with 120+ Common Goldeneyes, Isabella Reservoir (MH); Red-breasted Merganser, 18 Dec, four individuals, Isabella Reservoir (MH) & 23 Feb, two individuals (an adult male and a female), Isabella Reservoir, (MH); Thayer's Gull, 26 Dec, Isabella Reservoir (TG, AS); Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, 24 Feb, Galileo Hill (MH); Juniper Titmouse, 24 Feb, California City (MH); Gray Catbird, 18 Dec, still present at California City (MH); Hermit Warbler, 26 Dec, Old State Road, Greenhorn Mountains (SL, KP); Swamp Sparrow, 26 Dec, 5500' elevation, Alta Sierra, Greenhorn Mountains (SL, KP); Harris's Sparrow, 27 Dec-28 Feb+, settlement of Cane Brake east of Onyx (BG, DL). Recommended Winter Birding Areas/Birding Strategies: Note: If you are going to cut your birding day short, it is highly recommended that you do so at the end of your birding day rather than at the beginning. The most successful birding in the Kern River Valley and vicinity requires an early start (30-45 minutes before sunrise). Spend the mornings in the low country and the afternoons in the high country. If you are able to spend several days birding this area, visits to the high country some mornings will likely prove more productive than afternoon visits. |
